What makes the ideal doctor in your eyes?

Over 600 years ago, Korea had a frail king named Sejo, whose profound interest in medicine and personal health challenges inspired him to write a book titled Uiyakron ("The Theory of Medicine"). This work explored the ethics of physicians, principles of disease treatment, and the importance of prevention and proper living.
King Sejo believed that doctors should be more than skilled technicians. He argued that true physicians must uphold moral responsibility and philosophical depth. According to him, the best doctors, whom he called Shim-ui (心醫)—healers of the heart—understood that tending to a patient’s emotional well-being and considering their whole lifestyle was just as vital as treating physical ailments.

King Sejo emphasised that uncovering the root cause of disease was paramount. He advocated for a holistic diagnosis that accounted for the patient’s environment, psychological state and daily habits, rather than merely addressing symptoms. His philosophy resonates with the modern emphasis on treating the whole person, not just their illness.
Prevention was another cornerstone of his perspective. King Sejo believed that a healthy lifestyle and proper diet were essential to avoiding illness. He stressed that prevention begins with our daily attitudes and choices, a concept that aligns seamlessly with modern preventive medicine.
In today’s healthcare system, it is not always easy for doctors to explore a patient’s environment, emotions and lifestyle. Yet imagine having a doctor who genuinely listens, takes the time to understand your habits, and offers thoughtful, tailored guidance for better health. Such care goes beyond treatment—it builds trust, supports collaboration and creates space for true healing.
The next time you find yourself seeking care, consider opening your heart to a physician who values your overall well-being. Together, you can work towards not just resolving symptoms, but creating a foundation for lasting health and balance.
